Step #1 – Choosing topic
Most likely you found this tutorial, because you want to know how to start a blog, BUT do you know the main purpose for your blog? Is it…
- *Personal use (sharing your emotions, feelings, activities)?
- *Money making (blog for making money with Adsense and affiliate sales)?
- *Business website (blog for your business)?
These are the things that you should consider before making your own blog. Once you figure this out, the rest is peace of cake.
Step #2 – Domain registration and Hosting
The very next thing you should do is getting your blog a web address and hosting. Getting a domain name is probably one of the most exciting part of starting a blog. I love to spend some time choosing the best domain name for my blogs. However, as an alternative, you could also use your name (YourName.com) as a blog address.
You can get Domain name and Hosting from Dreamhost, Hostgator or any other hosting company that provides good customer support.
Domains don’t cost you more than $10 a year and hosting is $9 a month.
Step #3 – Installing WordPress (blog platform)
If you want to know how to start a blog, you need to know how to install wordpress. Happily, it’s quite easy and if you follow the instructions you don’t have to worry about it. Below are some simple facts about blogging platform called wordpress.
- WordPress is being used by over 15.1% of Alexa Internet’s “top 1 million” websites.
- 22% of the websites run on wordpress.
- WordPress is FREE.
- It was released on 2003.
- By the end of 2011, wordpress had been downloaded over 64 million times.
Most of the hosting companies have built in “1 Click Installation”.
Step #4 – Customizing your blog
Now, if you want to make your blog “unique” you might want to change the outlook. WordPress has different free and paid themes available and ready to use. Simply head over to http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/ and find the suitable theme that fits to your topic. However, if you want to get more unique themes then go to http://elegant-themes.com.
Once you have found the desirable theme, log in to your wordpress account from yoursite.com/wp-admin. Next, click on the Appearance -> Themes -> Install Themes. Simply browse for the theme.zip file from your computer that you downloaded earlier and click Install -> Activate.
If you feel that this theme is not for you or you are not satisfied then you are also able to change it. Don’t worry!
Little bit more advanced “stuff” is all kind of plugins which you can find from http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/. There are over 20,000 free plugins that all help/tweak your site in their own way. So you better don’t miss that opportunity to install some new plugins. It’s almost same as themes – simply download the plugin, go to Admin Dashboard -> Plugins -> Add new -> Upload. I’m more than sure that eventually you will get very familiar with the wordpress platform.
Once you have completed the steps from 1 to 3 you can start blogging. Steps 4 to 5 are just additional and they are not necessarily needed. I wish you good luck and if you have any questions then feel free to ask questions by leaving a comment below.
